Leadership National Study Abroad Trips
During my tenure as Director of the Cornerstone Honors Degree Program, I took a selected few Cornerstone Honors students to American cities that are steeped in history and leadership. One of the best ways to learn is through immersive study and field experience. Combining the leadership development each Northeast Cornerstone Honors student studies with five days of hands-on study, reflection, and analysis, the Cornerstone students selected to travel experience leadership through physical, mental, and emotional engagement.
These Honors students participate in a year-long leadership development class as part of their Honors degree. Engaging in discussion, experiential learning, and film studies, students work to develop their own leadership philosophies and to understand various styles of leadership, from servant leadership to ethical leadership. Other concepts they study are the importance of articulating a vision, building teams, leading with goals, making decisions, recognizing and avoiding groupthink, realizing change, empowering others, and understanding the history and, thus, the future of leadership. This course is based on the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies curriculum, of which I am certified to teach.
The Cornerstone Honors Leadership Tour is intensive field learning that allows students to witness, understand, and interpret various facets of leadership. Such things studied are manifestations of public memory (the Capitol's Statuary Room and memorials along the National Mall), artifacts (such as the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights), and leadership in action.
Students are required to write a reflective essay on leadership that ties in their conceptual understanding of leadership to a specific place visited during the leadership study abroad. Students are also required to create a video that explores Leadership in Action. Strong examples of these videos are highlighted on each study abroad page.
