Wherein I examine "Mein Herz Brennt" using a hybrid of the rhetorics of materiality and horror
This web essay provides an argument for why horror should be studied in rhetoric. The bulk of this web essay, though, is my examination of the rhetoric in two videos produced by the German industrial rock band, Rammstein. The two videos are of the same song, “Mein Herz brennt.” This web essay is intended to be an academic quasi-version of the Choose Your Own Adventure books in that you should be able to click on any of the pages in any order and still be able to make sense of my overall argument.
At least that’s what I hope will happen.
However, to gain a fuller appreciation of what I’m attempting to do in this web essay, which is an exploration of the materiality in the video edit and piano edit versions of “Mein Herz brennt” using a hybrid of horror and material rhetorics, I encourage you to (also) read this web essay in the order I have presented. You can find the menu navigation tools at the top and bottom of each page.
Since this is an experiment in delivery I’m engaging in, this web essay will not remain static. I plan on further developing my ideas and possibly adding more pages signifying additional lenses through which I will continue to peer at various Rammstein videos.
The next page will take you to my call for the study of horror in rhetoric.
